The subversive CULTURAL story: On Mother’s Day, it’s a cliché to hand Mom a bouquet of roses. ERIS wanted to go deeper and to honor mothers by examining — through scent — the fantasies we project onto them. So you can smell a warm, cozy milkiness “The Good Mother” in Mother’s Milk. And you can smell the “punishing, withholding” “Bad Mother” in Mother’s Milk in the form of a dark, animalic suede.

Ultimately, ERIS wants to hold space for the woman (who happens to be a mother) who is her own person, separate from this culturally loaded role.

2) The PERFUME story, subverting the GOURMAND category: ERIS wagers that the entire “gourmand” category in perfumery, starting with vanilla as the essence, goes back to the original inspiration: mother’s milk, the first source of comforting smells. But unlike most gourmand perfumes, which smell like simple cakes, candies, and sugary drinks, ERIS   adds a slightly dark note in MOTHER’S MILK, to disrupt the simplistic comfort that can be found in most gourmand fragrances, reminding us that perfume is an adult pleasure.
